Reverse engineering, or back engineering, can be used to determine materials and surface treatments used to manufacture a component and a sequence of processes by which the part may have been produced.
The techniques we can apply to compile a detailed assessment of a component could include analysis of composition and comparison with relevant standards to determine the material grade. Microstructures can be examined to identify methods of manufacturing and processing, eg casting, forging, extrusion, sintering, hot or cold working, heat treatment condition and any surface treatment that may have been applied to the component. Mechanical properties, including tensile, impact and hardness testing, can also be measured to determine a match to specifications and confirm material treatments and condition.
